How to run WhatsApp on PC

WhatsApp , without any doubt is the best instant messaging app for the mobile. WhatsApp was in news recently due to its acquisition by Facebook . WhatsApp is built for mobile and no official version exist for PC .There are many malware applications that claims to be WhatsApp for PC ,what they do is stealing your personal details . Any application that claim to be the pc client of WhatsApp need to be dealt with suspicion. Please don’t download them and put yourselves in danger.

So that means i can’t have WhatsApp on PC ? Officially no. But there is always a way , right ?

To run WhatsApp on PC , all you need to have is an android emulator downloaded on PC . Emulator , as the name suggests, creates a virtual android device within your PC and let you run all the apps within PC itself.

Official Android SDK contains emulator , which is used by developers to test their apk files. But running this emulator needs some complex setting up proccedurres. So i am not going to use that.  For those who want to give a try , download it from Android developers website.

There are a some other good emulators you could give a try. Bluestacks App player is a free one. But it should be considered a player , rather than an emulator, nevertheless runs android apps . When i tried out, i found it lagging and many a times i had to force shut it down.

An alternative is You Wave . This is the emulator that i use currently . This is not a freeware , but you can try it before buying. It is very stable and runs without any lag or freezes . Only issue i found is the ROM . The device that is being emulated doesnot have enough memory and neither i found an option to increase the memory. So that is a -ve for me. Anyways , the original application is far far bettter than Bluestacks .

So now back to the topic. With the emulator installed and opened , download the Whatsapp messenger and install it .

While opening it will ask for the phone number ,enter it and wait till the app waits for the confirmation code ( 5 Minutes) .

Once the time out is finished , you will reach a new window which says sms verification failed . Here you can enter the confirmation code you reeviced via sms . Just the enter the code in the space above call me button. Finished . You are now ready to use WhatsApp on PC . Enjoy !!!!

NB : Please note that WhatsApp doesnot allow same phone number to be used in multiple devices , so you may have to use a number that is not associated with an existing account .

Create an anti-theft app for android phone without coding

The project that was assigned to me today was to create an app that will lock the phone remotely in case of a theft .

Things you needed for this project . Please read the previous post for more details

  1. Tasker app . Download it from Play Store
  2. Secure settings plugin for Tasker – Free
  3. App Factory plugin – Free

So basically what i need is a way to lock the phone by means of an sms . Further the phone should remain locked till the correct code is entered . In addition i want to get the picture of the thief , taken without his knowledge , and send it to me by mms or upload it to dropbox . For all these things to happen , i have to make the phone understand that it is in wrong hands . I can go for a lock screen or a sim card change alert . I use a dual sim phone and hence sim card change alert could evoke false response . So i am going with the good old lock screen method . So let us start making the app. To know how to build apps in  Tasker , click here .

Step 1

Create a new project . Give a name. I named it as Buster

Add a State . State > Display Unlocked .

Add a new task . Give it a name .I named it as Secure.  Now add actions . Display > Lock

Choose a code to unlock . You can select whether you want a cancel button and also whether the lock is in full screen or not .

Now add a new state . State > Plugin > secure settings

Click on the pencil button to enter configuration and choose Failed Login Attempts

Choose the number of wrong attempts possible. I choose 3 and then click  on the save ( Floppy disc button) .

Go back and add a new task . Task >Media>Take Photo

Choose Front camera , give a file name and choose chronological in Naming Sequence.

Tick the Insert In Gallery option and also Discreet (To take photo without intruders attention ).

Step 2

Now the primary objective is completed . But what is the purpose if the photos were to remain in the phone itself ? So we have to create a new task to send the captured image to us . I also want to get the location of the phone send to me . Also you can set a task to send you a message from the phone , if the sim card is changed or tampered .

You can either create a new state or add a new task to the existing profile. I choose to add a new task to the profile Secure .

In the Task edit , add a new action. Choose Misc > Get Location

In this window you can select whether you need GPS based location or net or both. I choose both . You can select a time out for the service.

Now add another action. Phone > Send SMS

Give a phone number to which you want the location and photos to be send .  In the message  i want to include the location of the phone. So i type “Phone is currently in the co-ordinates %LOC ”  .

Now i want the photo captured to be send to me. When i tested this on my phone , i found that Tasker gives you an option to compose mms with the photo attached , but not to send it . So basically it means the photo will remain in the phone itself. But i have an option to upload the photo to my drop box account . For this i have to turn the mobile data on and also turn the auto sync on .

So i added a new action .   Net > Mobile Data > On

To turn auto sync on Net > Auto Sync > ON

This should do the work .

Step 3

OPTIONAL :  Lock down down your device remotely via an sms . Go to the Task edit . Add new action > Display > Lock . Choose a long code difficult to crack . Now go to the bottom of that window , you will see an IF with a + . Click the +  . Choose from the tag  ‘Text Body ‘ or enter %SMSRB  . Click on the button next to it and choose ‘Matches’ . Now enter your code to unlock the screen. It must be the same as entered earlier.   Now you can lock the phone by sending an sms with the code as your message body .

I can have two scenarios here . One :  the thief is using my sim card itself ( atleast for now ) . It won’t be an issue in sending the lock sms . But what if he changed my sim . So now i have to set the app to check the serial number of the sim and compare it with the serial number of new sim. If there is a difference , then the app should send a message to a pre-installed number . Once you receive the message , you can send the lock sms .

Your app is ready to build . Please read the previous post to know how to build an app .

Once your app is build , you can install it in your phone. Please note that this app cannot be distributed for obvious reasons unless it is in your family , because the phone number you set to send the sms can’t changed once it is build . Also the app doesn’t have any user interface , for that  you have to create scenes in Tasker .

So what do you think ? I would like to hear your opinion . Please like me and share your comments . Happy to help 🙂

Create apps on android phone without any coding

Last week we told you how to create applications for android phones without any coding . Today I am going one step further , telling you how to create your own apps within the mobile itself , without coding of-course .  You can distribute it for free or earn profit from it by selling through google play or appstores .

So what all things i need to start ?

The first thing i need is an app called Tasker.  It is a paid app and can be downloaded from Google Play store . Takser lets you automate tasks in the phone. It turns your smart phone into a super-smart-phone .Build your own reminders or change your wallpaper in regular intervals , Tasker does it seamlessly. You can do simple to complex things in Tasker. Taking photos with gestures, locking the gallery or an app, reading out the text messages , calling out the caller name etc etc . Imagine you building your own anti-theft app ! Yes it is possible in Tasker. You can make stand alone apps , yes *.apk files , using a free plugin Tasker App Factory , which you can download from Play  store.

So how to make an app ? I will show you how to make a simple app , which i named as Flip2 . What Flip2 does is , it will put the phone into silent / sleep mode when you place the phone face down. Please note that your phone need to be rooted for all the features to work. To know how to root your phone , click here.

First create a new project in Tasker . Before that you have to disable the Beginner mode in Preferences

Ok. Gave a name for the project, that will be the name for your app . Here i gave the name Flip2

Now we have to create a new profile for this app. Since we are going to create an app based on the state of the phone , choose State. In the State , choose Sensor . Now all the sensors available will be listed out in black .  Here for my app , i choose Orientation .

Once the orientation is selected , now you can choose the conditions . The app will work when the condition is satisfied. So i choose Face Down , so that the app will run when i keep the phone face down.

So you have successfully completed the profile. Now we have to choose the tasks to be carried out once the condition is met . I need my app to put the phone into silent mode , turn the wifi/ bluetooth/ mobile data off . So i choose New Task  and name it as Sleep .ChooseAudio>Silent Mode >On  – This will put the phone into silent mode on face down . Similarly i set the modes for Wifi, bluetooth, mobile data and media control ( eg :stopping the music player ) .Once you are done with the tasks , go back to Profiles

Now the phone knows what to do once i keep the phone face down. But we don’t want to keep our phone always down . So we have to assign exit tasks for the phone to revert back to the original settings, once we take our phone from the face-down condition . For this , press an hold the task name (Sleep) till a menu appears as shown above . Choose Add Exit Task. i want my phone out of silent mode and also turn the wifi on , if the battery level is more than 30 % . Also i can set a notification beep and also lock the phone for unauthorized users . I can also make the wifi on or off depending upon the location. But for now i am just reverting back to the original setting . Once you are done with exit task , go back to profile

Screenshot_2014-07-02-12-09-45      Screenshot_2014-07-02-12-09-52

Now your app is ready . Press the Project name till a new menu appears

Click Select Icon . You can choose from the inbuilt icons or download or choose your own ( You have to create an icon and download it to phone) .

Now the app is ready for building . If you are intending to publish the app into play store , you  have to create signatures . For this go to More >Developer Options>Create Certificate  .

Now Choose Export > As an App

Fill out the details about the app . Done . Your app will be created

Now you have successfully created an app. You can run it in your phone and distribute it through Play store .

Do you find this helpful ? Please share this and give your valuable comments .If anyone needed the Flip2 app , please post it in comments or my Facebook page.   Happy to help 🙂

Best 5 Live wallpapers in Playstore : Part One

What it makes android different from other operating system is the customization part. You can change the look , the behavior, sounds and what not ? Google Playstore got a separate section just for the personalization apps . You can choose from the thousands of themes, icon packs, wallpapers and launchers .  You will easily get lost in that wilderness. Don’t get baffled by the ratings . I have tested many of the top applications in that genre and must tell you , most of those highly rated apps doesn’t fare better than the free apps available .

Given the size of the playstore , the task of testing each and every app is not going to be feasible for us. So i randomly test apps , mostly from the small developers . I will list out the apps that i found worth mentioning over here . Today , the app that caught my eye is Live Jellyfish LWP

This was a surprise app for me. Found this one on my friends mobile . I instantly fell in love with it. This is a very simple live wallpaper . Smooth and clean animation. It is a very light app and doesn’t consume ram and lags . Since the wallpaper is a dark one , it also doesn’t consumes the battery too much. So easily a 5 star from me

You won’t regret paying for this live wallpaper.
